This site is written and run by Jacqualine Roche, in Aotearoa New Zealand. This page explains what information the site collects about readers, why, and what you can do about it.

What is collected

  • Your email address, and your name if you choose to give it, when you subscribe.
  • The page you subscribed from, so I can see which articles lead readers to subscribe.
  • Whether a newsletter email was opened and which links in it were clicked. This is recorded by the publishing platform against your subscription.
  • Anything you write to me by email.

Subscribing is free. The site takes no payments and holds no payment details. There are no comments and no advertising.

What it is used for

Your email address is used to send you new articles and to let you sign in to manage your subscription. It is not sold, rented or given to anyone for marketing.

Cookies

The site sets a cookie when you subscribe or sign in, so that it remembers you. It does not use advertising cookies, and it does not run a visitor-analytics service.

Who else handles the information

  • Ghost, the publishing platform that hosts this site, stores subscriber details and sends the newsletter emails through its email delivery provider. This means your details may be stored and processed outside New Zealand.
  • Unsplash supplies some of the photographs. When a page with one of those photographs loads, your browser fetches the image from Unsplash, which receives your IP address in the ordinary way.
  • Other websites. Articles link to outside sources. Those sites have their own privacy practices.

How long it is kept

Subscriber details are kept until you unsubscribe or ask for them to be deleted. Emails you send me are kept for as long as they are needed for the matter you wrote about.

Your choices and rights

  • Unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of every email.
  • Ask what I hold about you, and ask for it to be corrected or deleted, by writing to jacqualine.roche@icloud.com.

These rights apply under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020. Readers in Australia, the United Kingdom and the European Union have similar rights under their own laws, including the right to object to how their information is used. If you are not satisfied with my response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner in New Zealand, or to the privacy regulator where you live.

People named or described in the writing

If you are named or described in an article and wish to raise a concern, see Corrections and Right of Reply.

This site is written for adults and is not directed at children.
