A Ten-Part Series

Leer en español: [Trauma secundario en comunidades pequeñas](https://www.jacqualineroche.com/es/trauma-secundario-en-comunidades-pequenas/)

A household in a small community experienced a sustained period of instability, connected to untreated neurological and psychiatric injury in one of its members. The injury is linked to quinoline anti-malarials administered during military service — a class of compounds whose capacity to cause lasting harm is supported by drug regulators in multiple countries.

This series is not about that household. It is about the question of what a surrounding community may absorb from proximity to a prolonged crisis it did not cause and could not resolve — and whether anything from such a period continues to be carried by people who were never part of the family involved.

That question has not been formally studied. The series exists because of the absence, not despite it.

## Where to start

**Lived through this period?** Begin with Article 7, on terminology. Then Article 10\. The evidence in Articles 2–6 will still be there afterward.

**Assessing credibility?** Begin with Article 3, then Article 8.

**New to the subject?** Read in order, below.

## What the series claims — and does not

That certain quinoline anti-malarials can cause neuropsychiatric effects capable of outlasting the period of use. That the resulting presentation closely resembles PTSD. That families living alongside untreated psychiatric injury develop measurable secondary traumatic stress.

It does not claim any individual's condition was caused by these drugs. It does not claim anti-malarial injury causes domestic violence. It does not claim a community was harmed. It does not describe a new form of trauma.

**Ethical position:** This series makes no recommendations and offers no diagnosis. Its author was part of the household concerned — stated as a limitation, not a credential. Incidents are not described. Both moving on and not being able to are legitimate responses, and this series treats neither as correct.

Whether anything further should follow from this work is a decision for the people who were there.
